Academia/Mentorship

Like many women, I hold multiple roles. I am a Dean at Forsyth Tech, and I also run my own company, Rae of Knowledge, that focuses on mentorship as a key form of retention.

My greatest achievement has been meeting fear with courage! Because of that, I've accomplish things I've only dreamed of: motherhood, doctorate, career advancement, and business owner.

My greatest resource has been the incredible women who have offered me support, and referred me to other people throughout my life. Other resources include many books on leadership, business development, and resilience.

My advice would be to research the topic careful and do lots of reading; make plans; and ask for help. Asking for help is the key to any challenge.

My grandmother is my role model. She started her own business in her basement, and kept it going for over 50 years (she retired at 81)! That business put her girls through college, and taught me so much about determination and courage. My mother carried on that spirit of entrepreneurship, and I now have it. The more I learn about business, the more in awe I become of my grandmother, who started it all.

My biggest challenge is selling my business. I'm more of a "behind the scenes" person, so having to market my services and talk to people about it has been a challenge (and an opportunity) for me.

The best lesson I've learned that I would pass on to another is to do something everyday to move your dreams forward. It doesn't have to be big; just do something.
