Professional Women of Winston-Salem awarded its first $500 scholarship in December, 2000 to Linda K. Evans, a student at Forsyth Technical Community College, who is majoring in Office Systems Technology. After her first year of studies, she became a work-study student serving as an office assistant in the Office of Director of International Studies at FTCC. Linda strives to be a role model for her daughter to let her know how important it is to have an education and be self-supporting. The 2001 scholarship was awarded to Christie L. Canty, an Information Specialist for FIRST LINE and undergraduate at FTCC. The mother of three children under the age of 12, Christy's goal is to become a child psychologist because she has always wanted to help children. She feels they are "most vulnerable since they didn't ask to be here nor are they prepared for what is to come." Joy Truluck was recipient of the PWWS scholarship in December, 2002. As a single mother, Joy is employed full-time by Bell Research and will be completing her undergraduate degree at Salem College in May, 2003. Her enormous persistence, determination and leadership potential make Joy a remarkable young woman. She aspires to enroll in a Masters in Regional Planning program at UNC-CH after graduation. Vicki L. Sergeant Moser was awarded the scholarship for fall, 2002. A divorced mother of 2 boys, she has been employed as a patient services coordinator at the Comp Rehab, North Carolina Baptist Hospital for the past three years. She was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa National Honors Society in December, 2001. Highly recommended for the scholarship award, her goal is to obtain an Associate Degree in Nursing at Forsyth Technical Community College. On completion, she plans to work as a nurse, and then continue her education to earn her Baccalaureate of Science degree in nursing. In December 2004, PWWS awarded the scholarship to Rebecca Sidden. She is a student at Forsyth Tech and mother of 2 daughters. Her career goal is to teach at a community college after receiving a bachelors degree in English and computer technologies. She hopes to be an inspiration to her daughters and other single mothers by showing them that dreams can come true through education.
